What is Bengkung Bellybinding
Bengkung belly binding is a traditional postpartum practice that originated in Malaysia and Indonesia. It involves wrapping a long strip of cloth tightly around the abdomen of a new mother to help support her abdominal muscles and aid in the recovery process after childbirth.
The belly binding process is typically done by a trained practitioner or a family member who has experience with the technique. The cloth used for binding is usually made from natural materials, such as cotton or muslin, and is about 10 to 12 yards long and 9 to 10 inches wide.
The binding process involves wrapping the cloth tightly around the mother’s abdomen, starting at the hips and working up to just below the breasts. The cloth is then secured with knots or pins, creating a snug and supportive “corset-like” effect.
The benefits of Bengkung belly binding are said to include:
- Supporting the abdominal muscles and organs as they return to their pre-pregnancy state.
- Encouraging the uterus to return to its pre-pregnancy size and position.
- Reducing swelling and inflammation in the abdomen.
- Providing additional back support.
- Promoting a sense of comfort and relaxation.
While Bengkung belly binding is generally considered safe for most women, it’s important to consult with a healthcare provider before trying it, especially if you have any medical conditions or complications during pregnancy or childbirth. It’s also important to ensure that the binding is not too tight, as this can cause discomfort or even harm.
